New members welcome! We are in particular need of more Bass singers - please spread the word!
Singing with SANS
Our 2024-25 season will include a concerts in November and May, plus special events during the year: A special Women’s Day concert at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church in March, our celebratory SANS Walk for Music in the Spring, and our famous Gala Cabaret (date TBD).
Fall Theme: “All You Need is LOVE”
This fall our music is all about LOVE - from Lean on Me, celebrating the bonds of friendship and brother/sisterhood, to the Oscar-winning 1980’s ballad The Time of My Life. We’ll celebrate family love with the gorgeous and poignant A Mother’s Love, and we’ll let loose and get everyone dancing in the aisles with Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody. And of course, we’ll sing the Beatles classic All You Need is Love, because when have we ever needed more love than right now?!
We’ll also sing songs (or snippets of songs) from our recent Multicultural England Tour, including the upbeat South African Avulekile Amasago we learned from the African Gospel Choir in London, and the infectious I’m Gonna Be Free we sang with the Birmingham Community Gospel Choir. We’ll also take a stab at a portion of the mesmerizing Akashganga from the BVG Indian Choir of England. Don’t worry if you weren’t on the trip – we will all need to start at the beginning to learn these songs!
As part of our mission, SANS travels each year to sing with choirs around the world, building bonds of friendship and mutual understanding. Not all singers travel every year. You may join the choir without planning to travel with SANS.
SANS is a non-auditioned choir, but we do ask that singers can match pitch and rhythm in a choral setting, and agree to attend weekly rehearsals and memorize our music and sing off-book in concerts.
SANS Tour 2025: Peru
In late June/early July, SANS will embark on a singing tour of Peru - an exploration of ancient, colonial and indigenous cultures, musical exchanges with Peruvian groups, and some "bucket list" sights including Machu Picchu. Destinations will include Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu & the Sacred Valley, and Chincha (the heart of Afro-Peruvian music). NOTE: You do not need to travel to sing in the chorus.
We are working with our friends from Latin America Concert Tours to organize this trip. This is the same group that organized SANS trips to Argentina/Uruguay, Colombia, Nicaragua, and other destinations. We are thrilled to be working with them again!
Trip Registration will open in November.
Expectations for Singers & Health Protocols
While SANS in a non-auditioned community chorus, singers should be able to match pitch and rhythm in a choral setting.
Singers are required to attend weekly rehearsals and dress rehearsals. Singers are asked to miss no more than 2 in-person rehearsals in the fall, 3 in the spring. Attendance at Dress Rehearsal is mandatory. Exceptions due to illness or extenuating circumstances may be discussed with the music staff.
Singers agree to memorize our music and sing off-book by concert time and on tour.
SANS sends weekly emails with key info and maintains a members-only section of our website with learning resources, including lyrics, audio clips and videos. Singers are encouraged to use these resources as they are made available.
Singers with any cold/flu/Covid symptoms are asked to stay home and participate via livestream.
Masks are optional at rehearsals and concerts. If we experience a Covid outbreak, or circumstances change, the SANS Board may ask singers to wear masks for a period of time.
