Fall Concert 2023:
When the GLORY Comes: Songs of Struggle, Spirit & Joy
Directed by Donnell Patterson
Saturday, December 2, 7:30 pm
First Parish Unitarian Universalist
630 Mass Ave, Arlington, MA
Join us for a rich musical journey through themes of struggle and sorrow, persistence and resistance, exhilaration and joy.
We take our title from the pop/hip hop anthem “Glory” (from the film Selma) by John Legend and Common. SANS heard this song performed by the Carlton Reese Memorial Choir in Birmingham on our Civil Rights Tour in March 2023, with the Rap section sung by the city’s former police chief - the first woman and person of color to hold that post. It was one of many highlights of our trip, and we’ve decided to add this meaningful song to our repertoire this year.
Other concert highlights will include the moving traditonal spiritual, I’ve Been Buked, made famous by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, new choral versions of pop songs Dancing in the Moonlight and Keep Your Head to the Sky, and an uplifting Zambian Folk Song, Bonse Aba, which loosely translated says, “all who sing with the spirit may be called the children of God.”
